Things went horribly wrong. It was a real train wreck. We tried to {compensate|address the situation, but it was like trying to stop a tsunami with a cocktail stick. We're still picking up the pieces and feeling the impact of this disaster.

This problem has spiraled out of control. It's a total catastrophe. We've tried just about everything to fix it, but nothing seems to function. At this point, it feels like we're toast. Honestly, I don't know what else to do. This is a nightmare of epic proportions.
That's So Cringe, It's Hilarious (In a Way)
Sometimes you find yourself face-to-face with situations so terrible that you can't help but laugh. It's like your brain tries to understand the sheer magnitude of destruction and just throws its hands up, opting for amusement as a coping strategy.
But then, you suddenly become aware that it's not really hilarious. It's just plain horrifyingly awful. And the laughter you felt morphs into a groan.
In the end, you are left with a sense of confusion. You question about the meaning of it all. Was this intended to be funny?
Or were we just all part of a grand, cosmic prank?

Awful Day Ever
It all started with my case of terrible hair. I couldn't make it to look right. As I was running out the door, I trippedon and landed all over the floor. To make matters worse, I was completely running behind for work.
I panting. My {boss|teacher|was absolutely furious. I managed to explain, but it was a complete disaster.
The rest of the day was absolutely horrendous. seemed to conspire against me. I couldn'tthink straight.
By the time I reached my destination, I was physically and emotionally wiped out. This day, this atrocious day will be forever remembered as the worst day ever.

It all started out horribly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then things went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just read more want to scream into a pillow.
